You wouldn’t know it by looking at the relatively clean-cut nature of the four guys that make up Canadian pop band Neverest, but the band’s roots lie in something much heavier than rosy pop music.
Neverest vocalist-guitarist Spyros ‘Spee’ Chalkiotis will be the first to admit that in a time not so long ago, he played in a heavy metal band.
So how exactly do you go from writing six- to eight-minute metal opuses to crafting easily digestible pop songs?
“Each of us in the band have come from such different backgrounds,” a genial Chalkiotis starts. “Every one of us in the band actually played in metal bands when we were younger but as a musician, you grow and go through different phases and genres of music in terms of what appeals to you. I find that, as a musician, I matured an incredible amount after coming out of university. At the end of the day though, my goal was to have a wide listening audience and to do something that I love.”
One of the arguably biggest coups for the guys in Neverest has been having their band added to the upcoming Canadian dates of the NKOTBSB tour. Matching Neverest up with two of the biggest pop bands of all time (New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys) seems like a no-brainer as their pop hooks should be easily digested by fans there to see the main acts perform. The excitement in Chalkiotis’ voice when talk turns to his band’s good fortune is palpable.
“Everything seems kind of like a dream; it is very humbling,” he says. “We have been so blessed with the support we have had from radio, our fans and our management team from day one. There are so many other bands out there who would have loved to land these shows and I think the fact we landed the shows is a testament to the team we have working with us. I don’t think that any of us can begin to understand the amounts of work that must have gone into making it happen.”
Though he doesn’t outright say it, Chalkiotis is probably hopeful that Neverest’s career will somewhat mirror that of both NKOTB and BSB.
Though both of those bands hit their peak long ago, they continue to appeal to and draw a wide audience. Many of the teens that were caught up in New Kids fever in the late ’80s and early ’90s now have their own kids so while the parents are going to the show for nostalgia, their kids are going to attend what might be their first concert experience.
“Both Backstreet Boys and NKOTB have had this remarkable ability to hold onto their fans after all these years,” Chalkiotis says. “While I believe their target audience is actually the same these days, they have done an amazing job bringing a new generation of fans out to their shows.”

The band released their first single, “About Us”, in October 2010. It quickly reached Number 1 on the MuchMusic Top 30 countdown[3], and Number 30 on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100[4]. Their second single entitled “Everything” was released in March 2011 and quickly charted the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 currently peaking at Number 52[5].
Neverest has been announced as a supporting act on the Canadian tour dates of the NKOTBSB Tour[6].
Their music video for “Everything” received a nomination for the 2011 MuchMusic Video Awards for Cinematography of the Year[7].
Neverest released their first EP About Us on March 29, 2011. Soon after, the band embarked on their first ever concert tour, supporting Junonominated band Stereos[8]. Their EP consisted of 8 songs, including:
